On June 10th, 2020 Belize’s first case of an illegal entrant to Belize was confirmed. Now the 22nd confirmed case is that of the same nature.
A team of police officers intercepted a vehicle with four persons, three of whom were Guatemalan nationals and the other a Belizean, at a routine checkpoint on the George Price Highway near Unitedville Village.
The men were taken to the San Ignacio Community Hospital to be swabbed for COVID-19 per the Ministry of Health’s protocol. The Guatemalans were taken to the Western Border where Immigration issued them an Order to Leave and ensured they went across the border. The results were made available late in the evening of June 16th and yielded a positive case for one of the Guatemalan nationals. The Guatemalan authorities were notified of one positive result.
The Belizean who was found in their company remains in mandatory quarantine. Upon completion of quarantine, he will be charged by Immigration for harboring illegal immigrants.
Now all of this makes me wonder how many others may be out there that we haven’t really caught up to.
