Hurrican Richard was the last hurricane that hit our country in 2010. It swept through our cayes and southern parts of Belize. This year was one of those unpredictable years. Category 1 hurricane Earl left its mark on our country.
Overnight, Earl slammed into the coast of our nation with winds of 80 mph (130 kph), leaving our islands battered, with lots of flooding within the country.
While not as strong as the previous hurricanes which have threatened us, there were several homes swept away and roofs torn apart specifically on coastal areas that are below sea-level. Power lines around the country were down causing areas to be without electricity, water was off, television and radio stations were mostly off air.
Flooding is what has continued to cause some damage as seen on the pictures which are on the innermost west side of our country San Ignacio. Despite being deep inland the waters rose, but are slowly starting to go down.
